In 2025, over 70 countries offer digital nomad visas. Digital nomad visas are official permits specifically intended for remote workers, freelancers, and self-employed professionals with income sourced from outside the host country. You can legally live and work abroad with these visas, which usually have clear rules about your income, tax obligations, and length of stay.
In this article, you will find a country-by-country breakdown of digital nomad visas in 2025. Each entry includes the relevant technical details (minimum income, permitted length of stay, eligibility for dependents, and tax rules) to help you evaluate your relocation options with clarity.
What are digital nomad visas, and who are they for?
Digital nomad visas let foreign nationals live in a country while working remotely for a company or clients based elsewhere.
They don’t require sponsorship from a local employer. These visas are built for remote professionals who already have a job or business outside the country they plan to relocate to. They make it legal and easy for tech workers to live abroad without having to switch jobs.
What is the best digital nomad visa in 2025?
The best digital nomad visa in 2025 is a five-way tie between Estonia, Croatia, Portugal, Spain, and Canada (which actually doesn’t have a programme.) The grounds to call these the best digital nomad visas hinge on a balance between how well-developed the program is and how good the country is in terms of quality of living. Also, I contemplate how long they allow you to stay over there (for your reference, Japan lets you stay for six months and that’s it!). Canada doesn’t have a formal digital nomad visa, but you can get to the country with a well-paying U.S. job and use some mechanisms to live legally in Canada.
